Sincerely, Clueless

Dear Lady,
How do you get a man to treat you like a Lady?
Sincerely, Clueless

Dear Clueless,

A woman dictates to others how she is to be treated, if you act like a Lady who deserves to be treated as such, you will be and you won't have to say a word. You simply need to have the conviction and follow through with it.

This may be harder than it seems, especially if you were not raised to expect your escort to behave in such a manner. Remembering that your escort is supposed to open all doors, take your coat, pull out your chair, or handle the business of carrying things, can be difficult if you've done it yourself all your life.

Trust me on this, if you stop in front of a closed door, eventually your escort will get the idea and open the door for you. The same goes for car doors; sit in the passenger seat long enough, your escort will either figure it out or ask you if you’re coming. If they ask, a polite response is required, as manners are key in this. Saying something to the effect of, "I would love to" and staring pointedly at the closed car door is usually sufficient. When he opens the door for you, and he will, you extend your hand and wait for him to 'help' you out of the car.

Expecting to be treated as a Lady does not show that you cannot do these things for yourself, nor does it show that your escort believes you are not capable. Instead, it shows your self-worth and your self-esteem, along the quality and character of both you and your Gentleman.

On the flip side, if you expect to be treated like a Lady, you must reciprocate and treat your man like a Gentleman. This means, above all else, you show your appreciation with proper manners and grace for the care your Gentleman gives you.

Sincerely, Not Inbred

Dear Lady,
I am tired of having my new Yankee girlfriends make fun of me for shows like Honey Boo-Boo and Duck Dynasty, and I can’t wait to give them all a copy of Dear Yankee to read to set them straight! In the meantime, what show or movie would you recommend that depicts the South and Southerners in the right light?
Sincerely, Not Inbred

Dear Not Inbred,

With shows like those, and movies like Deliverance, is it any wonder Yanks cling to the stereotypes? Even with the popularity of Daryl Dixon in the Walking Dead, it is still hard to convince Yanks that there is a difference between the social cliques in the South, and that each clique has its own merits.

I do have a ‘welcome to the South’ movie list for newcomers. Steel Magnolias is first on my list, followed by Sweet Home Alabama, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and for a bit of Southern horror, Skeleton Key. All of these movies have strong sense of Southern Culture and great depictions of Southern Characters.

If you ask why I left Gone with the Wind off the list, I just think you should save the best for last!
